MR2 Names

Originally MR2 stood for mid-ship runabout, later evolving into mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, and a number of other variants. Informally referred to as “Mister 2”

Turbo model (Import only for the UK market) known in the UK as “Tubby”.

In France and Belgium the MR2 is called the “Coupe MR”, because “MR2” in French would be pronounced “M-ER-Deux”, which sounds a lot like the French “merde”, or “shit”!

Australian MR2’s come in two flavours, the “MR2 Bathurst” and “MR2 GT”.

MKIII

The latest version, the MKIII, is known as:

  • called the Toyota MR-S in Japan

  • the Toyota MR2 Spyder in the USA

  • the Toyota MR2 Roadster in Europe

  • the Toyota MR2 in Mexico
