Chassis Codes
AW11 is the chassis code for any MKI; AW15 (NA) and AW16 (SC) are the start of the VIN. The original 1985 engine (a single carburettor 1500cc) is the AW10.
The AW10’s were never imported to the US (nor are they US-legal). They had the 3AC engine, (out of the bottom-line Corollas) not a 4A.
Chassis numbers are read:
- A, S = denotes the engine series (4A-GE, 3S-GE, etc)
- W = MR2
- 15, 16, 20, etc = specific model number
