The MKI has crumple zones as well as five separate bulkheads:
- one behind the radiator
- one on the front firewall
- one behind the seats
- one behind the engine bay
- one behind the trunk
Also the external rear sheet metal is much thinner and absorbs a rear impact to the trunk.
The 1985 MR 2 had a 5 star collision rating (maximum safety rating) for both driver and passenger in a frontal collision.
