In freezing weather, leave the pop-up headlights in the locked, fully up position, that way you won’t be stuck with headlights frozen down, and thus unusable.
The headlight switch has four positions:
- Off (all the way counter-clockwise)
- Parking lights (1st position)
- On (2nd position). Note that the lights will turn off when you turn the engine off, and open the drivers door; the light mechanism stays up.
- Lock (all the way clockwise). Lights stay up, but are not on.

There appears to be a badly engineered component associated with the headlight harness/connectors. This is a cylindrical connector which has rubber plugs at both ends to seal out water.
Unfortunately, as this connector ages, the rubber shrinks as it drys out and allows water to seep into the connections there. (4-5 actually) Adding to this problem is that this connector is vertical when the headlights are retracted and thus prone to store water and accelerate severe corrosion.
Symptoms of this failure are similar to the failure of the headlight relay: lights will not come on, motor fails to lift/retract headlight assembly,popup inadvertently, lack of high/low beams etc etc.
My solution is to direct wire the wiring coming in and out of this connector. I have not seen a waterproof replacment for this 5 wire connector and soldering is much easier for lots of us DIY repairmen.
